Widow's allowance is as much for the benefit of the children as for the wife, and where there are children residing with the widow she has no power to deprive them of this means of support so long as they are under age.2

It is the purpose of the law to give the necessary sustenance to every bereaved family for, at least, one year succeeding the death of the husband, to enable them to re-establish themselves under the new conditions and circumstances to which the death has committed them.
