The flamingo is a most interesting piece to carve and makes a striking mantle or desk ornament when finished with brilliant colors.
(1) Block of wood 1 1/2 inches thick by 3 inches wide by 9 1/2 high.
(2) Trace pattern Figure 146 and cut out.
(3) Draw center line over blank. See arrow, Figure 147.
(4) Start at back, which is the widest portion of bird. Figure 148.
(5) Work around neck, being extremely careful of the short grain, which comes at the middle of the neck. See arrow, Figure 148. Thickness of neck, 3/8 inch.
(6) The legs are purposely made to touch at the knee joints for added strength. See arrow, Figure 149. Thickness of legs at smallest portion, 3/16 inch.
(7) Carve wings as shown in Figure 150.
(8) Follow Figure 151 for head and beak. Thickness of head and bill at widest point, 5/8 inch.
(9) Paint according to color chart, Figure 152.
