(1) Secure a piece of fine-grained pine wood 1 1/4 inches thick by 5 inches long by 4 inches high for the mother zebra. Block of wood for colt 1 inch thick by 3 1/4 inches long by 3 1/2 inches high.

(2) Place pattern of zebras on block of wood and trace. Grain of wood shown by arrow, Figure 94.

(3) Cut out with coping saw or band saw, Figure 95.

(4) Begin first knife cuts at tail to produce rounded portion of hind legs. Thickness of hips, belly, and chest makes the widest portions of body. See contour sketches, Figure 96.

(5) Move up to mane and ears. Distance from ear tip to ear tip is 5/8 inch. Thickness of mane, 1/4 inch.

(6) Saw opening for front legs as shown by arrow, Figure 97.

(7) Finish front and back legs as shown in Figure 98.

(8) Develop face for shape. Width across nostrils 1/2 inch. Figure 98.

(9) For finishing, refer to instructions on shellac and varnish, p. 125. See Figure 99.

(10) On colt, follow general instructions as given for mare. Figures 100-102.
