Paragraph 26. In laying out a quarter-pitch cut (Chapter V., Paragraph 77), lay the steel square on the working face of the material in such a position that the number of inches indicated on the blade will be twice the number on the tongue, and make these figures exactly even with the working edge. (See Figure 42.) For illustration, if on the blade you make the number 8" even with the working edge, on the tongue make the number 4" even with the working edge. Then by marking along the blade of the square you will lay out the angle of the foot, or lower end of the quarter pitch rafter or brace. By marking along the tongue of the square you could lay out the angle for the top cut.
