Habitat. - Coasts of Mediterranean.

Part employed. - The fresh bulb.

Characters. - Bulb pear-shaped; weighing from 1/2 lb. to 10 lbs.; outer scales membranous, brownish-red or white; inner scales thick, whitish, fleshy, juicy; taste mucilaginous, intensely and disagreeably bitter, somewhat acrid.

Preparation. - Tincture, corresponding in alcoholic strength with proof spirit. Vide p. 16, Process 2.
