Stockholm tar that has been kept for a long time and has thickened may be melted down by a gentle heat, and thinned either with creosote oil or with coal-tar naphtha; this will require very great care, especially if the latter be used, the materials being very inflammable. The tar may be applied cold if sufficiently fluid; but for treating wood it is better to apply the tar hot, because then it penetrates much better.
