In tempering small V-shaped springs for gun-locks, the springs must be made red hot over a clear forge fire, and then plunged into cold water and allowed to cool. They are warmed and rubbed all over with mutton suet, which is then blazed off over a clear fire and the springs allowed to cool. Be careful not to overheat the steel.
