To clean and relacquer brass fittings, take all the parts to pieces and place them in a boiling solution of carbonate of soda or potash, l lb. to a gallon of water. To remove the old lacquer, swill in clean water. Then dip in commercial aquafortis quickly several times till of a golden colour, swill each time in clean water, and add a pinch of cream of tartar to the last swilling. Dry out in hot sawdust. Burnish the bright parts with a steel burnisher, using a little oxgall to lubricate. Dry out in sawdust as before. Heat on a hot plate, and lacquer with a camel-hair brush.
