Etienne Manrice Falconet, a French sculptor, born in Paris in 1716, died in 1791. He was a pupil of Lemoine, and early gained distinction by a statue of Milo of Crotona. Many of his works were destroyed at the time of the revolution. None of them were equal in merit to the immense bronze equestrian statue of Peter the Great, which he executed at St. Petersburg, by order of Catharine II., in 1776-'8.
