Appold, J. George, an English inventor, born in 1799, died at Clifton, Aug. 31, 1804. The paying-out apparatus used in laying submarine telegraphs was chiefly his invention. His centrifugal pumps for drainage purposes attracted much attention at the international exhibitions of 1851 and 1862. In his own house and its surroundings almost everything was automatic, doors and shutters opening and closing mechanically. He had also secured a monopoly as a dresser of furs by a secret process.
