In the tripbthongal combinations, spr, str, skr, and spl, s is written with the long sign, and pr, tr, kr, and pl are treated as compounds. Reading Exercise 3.
Remark. - These and other compound signs should not be considered contractions; their use is strictly phonetic, and tends to make the writing more legible and beautiful. They can give the student no trouble when once he comprehends the principle; their use is seldom in any degree equivocal. See Illustration O.
