Before the days of the automobile, the horse with the hat was a familiar sight on many a street.
Use any wood for this carving with a block size of 1 1/8 by 4 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches, and lay out the pattern with the grain running as indicated by the arrow in Figure 71.
After rough carving the horse, begin whittling the hat which rests on top of the horse's head; then go back to the rear of the animal and shape the tail which is 1/2 inch at its widest point.
The front legs are carved the same for both sides while the right and left hind legs are in different positions. See Figures 72 and 73 for this construction.
