Prep. Made by dissolving half an ounce of acetate of potash (KO, C4 H3 O3) in five fluid ounces of distilled water.

Use. This solution is employed to distinguish between tartaric and citric acids. When added to a solution of citric acid no precipitate takes place, but with tartaric acid, the sparingly soluble bitartrate of potash is precipitated (HO, KO, C8 H4 O10).
