This is a combination of acetol and salicylic acid. It occurs as a white crystalline powder, having a bitter taste, but is odorless, and is but slightly soluble in water. It is free from toxic properties, and is claimed to be innocuous even in the largest doses. It is an efficient antiseptic, and when brought in contact with a wounded surface it is resolved into its constituent parts, without changing the structure of the parts to which it is applied. Compared with salol, -salicetol contains more salicylic acid.
