Neutral or acid Sulphate of Quinine; soluble Quinine. C20 H24 N2 02 SO4 H2. H20.
In white needle prisms, soluble in 10 parts of water. It is a definite salt, and a dry crystalline powder, that can be given in powder, as soluble pills, or in a very moderate amount of water without acid. Dose, 1 1/4 grains, 1 grain of ordinary sulphate representing the same amount of alkaloid. In U. S. A. Pharm., 1880.
Soluble in alcohol and water (in 60 parts of cold water). It offers the combination of the properties, in part synergic, of quinine and of the bromated preparations. In pills of 1 1/2 grains up to 6 to 10 grains a day. It has arrested malaria, and is hypnotic with the effects of quinine. Gubler, of Paris, has given 1 1/2 grains in a hyperdomic injection of the strength of 1 to 10 in water slightly alcoholized. The two bromides are in French Codex, 1884. Quinine Bromate is a different salt.
Quinine Dihydrochlorate has been recommended for hypodermic injections.
Recommended for enlarged spleen, especially of malarial origin; used in rickets and mal-nutrition of the osseous system. Dose, 1 to 2 grains, in powder or pill.
For chronic rheumatism. The St. Bartholomew's formula is a fluid mixture of Quinine, 2 grains, Pot. Iodid, 5 grains. Dose, 1 to 3 grains.
In white anhydrous prismatic needles, soluble in three parts of cold water. 100 parts contain 78.26 of the alkaloid. Valuable as a tonic in weak digestion, from its solubility.. Similar doses to the ordinary Sulphate. In French Codex, 1884.
This (and Salicylate of Cinchonine) are valuable in neuralgia and rheumatic gout. Dose for former disease, 1 to 6 grains; for latter, 1 to 3 grains every 6 hours.
Usually sold as Carbolate.
