Naphthalin hydroxyl.

White shining rhombic tabular crystals, or slightly aromatic, colourless, a product from coal tar. Soluble in spirit and fat, and readily absorbed by the skin. Melts at 251.6 0. Volatilizes by heat.

Therapeutics. Is an external antiseptic substitute for tar preparations, but not to be confounded with Naphthalin. A parasiticide, in eczema, itch, etc. A lard ointment of 3 to 25 %, or an alcoholic solution of 2 to 10 % of Naphthol, with 1 % of eucalyptus oil is the usual strength, but one of 5 % is almost a specific for prurigo; it can be applied in powder to wounds. Toxic internally. Also a powerful antiseptic and disinfectant, 1 in 1,000 of water.

Diaxynaphthalene. C10 H6 (OH)2 Is related to Beta Naphthol as Resorcin is to Carbolic Acid. A still more powerful antiseptic.

Hydronaphthol. From .β naphthol, an atom of hydroxyl replacing one of hydrogen - by some believed to be an impure form of β. naphthol. Inodorous powder, scarcely soluble in water, for ringworm.

Alpha-Naphthol is also a powerful antiseptic.

Naphihol-camphor (beta-naphthol 100 parts, camphor 200 parts) and Salol-camphor, (salol 300 parts, camphor 200 parts,) are good antiseptics for wounds. Powder the substances and warm gently till liquifaction takes place.

They dissolve 10 per cent, of Iodine, Cocaine Mur, etc. Naphtylamin hydrochlorate, CI0H7NH9. HC1.

Forms a white crystalline powder of a peculiar odour; it is easily soluble in water, ether, and alcohol. Naphtylamin hydrochlorate is of no use in therapeutics, but it is a remarkably fine test for oxidizing agents, such as ferric chlorides, chromic acid, etc, with which it yields blue and finally purple coloured precipitates; also it is a very sensi-tive test for microscopical researches of lignified cells, which will become apparent by assuming an orange colour. White feathery crystals. Innoxious, sedative narcotic. Dose, 1/4 gr. to 1 gr.
