All medicaments that are soluble are subject to atomization, and can be used for many forms of diseases, both local and constitutional. The atomization is effected by a spray producing apparatus, now in common use, and needs no explanation here, nor does the different methods of applying atomized fluids for various purposes.

The usual method of administering the spray is by inhalation, but the same is applicable to any external part of the body. Thus conjunctivitis, and keratitis, certain diseases of the ear, ulcers, a have been successfully treated by the application of suitably atomized fluids. Atomized anaesthetics have been used both for local aud constitutional anaesthesia.b The spray of rhigo-line c and ether d for local anaesthesia, and freezing effects. When used by inhalation for the treatment of diseases of the respiratory organs, they have been beneficially used in pharyngitis-granulosa, ulcero-syphilica, laryngitis chronica, phthisis, etc.e Many have reported favorable results in cases of whooping-cough, asthma, inveterate bronchitis, aphonia, tuberculosis, gan-grena pulmonum, pneumonia, bronchiectasis emphysema,f and various forms of nasal catarrh.g

When an atomized fluid is administered by inhalation, it must be borne in mind that besides the local effects, the medicaments are much more readily absorbed through the mucous membrane than by internal application, a fact which must be taken into consideration when the dose is to be decided on.f

We have already made -the statement that some diseases of the kidneys may be treated with favorable results by medicated inhalations. There is evidently a close relation between the lungs and the kidneys, physiologically to maintain the purity of the lungs by elimination. Dr. Falckson, after two hours exposure to carbolic acid spray, recovered from his urine thirty grains of carbolic acid. All remedies that have their election for the kidneys, are not deterred by inhalation from their natural route.
