Belleric myrobalans are described as astringent and laxative and useful in cough, hoarseness, eye diseases, etc. As a constituent of triphalά or the three myrobalans, they are used in almost al diseases. The kernel of the fruits is said to be narcotic and astringent, and is used as an external application to inflamed parts.1 In hoarseness, belleric myrobalans, rock salt and long pepper, rubbed into a paste with butter-milk, are recommended to be used as a linctus.2 Another prescription for sore throat and hoarseness is as follows. Belleric myrobalans are fried in clarified butter ; they are then covered with a paste of wheat-flour and slightly roasted on a fire. The cortical portion of the fruits thus prepared, is recommended to be kept in the mouth for the relief of sore throat, cough and catarrh.3
