Mr. Lyte was one of the oldest of Pennsylvania nurserymen, having been for many years the proprietor of the Smoketown nurseries, near the town of Bird-in-Hand, in Lancaster county. These were founded in 1840, and always bore a high character. Thousands of fruit trees in Eastern, Southern and Central Pennsylvania, were originally propagated on these grounds, and the enormous patronage brought, what few modern nurseries bring, a considerable degree of wealth to the proprietor. He was a man of sterling integrity, and like all good men, took an interest in public affairs. He was for a long time in service on the School Board, and also for many years elected Justice of the Peace. He died on the 16th of November, in his 72d year.
