A shrub 2 - 6 feet high; found in open woods, swamps. Massachusetts to Florida, west to Illinois, Missouri, Texas.

Flowers

Crimson-pink to nearly white, the base of the long, narrow tube deeper in color, divisions 5, 6 long, protruding filaments; flowers borne in small, terminal clusters, opening with or before the leaves.
