A climbing vine, 3 - 6 feet high, found in low, moist ground. New Brunswick to Minnesota, south to Florida, Louisiana, and Kansas.

Flowers

Maroon and pale brown-lilac, fragrant, borne in short, thick clusters from the leaf angles.

Leaves

Compound, 3 - 7 oval leaflets.

Rootstock bears edible, tuberous enlargements.
