This section is from the book "Elementary Banking", by John Franklin Ebersole. Also available from Amazon: Elementary Banking.
It is the custom in commercial banking to render statements of account monthly, or more frequently, depending upon the wishes of the customer. A statement of account is usually a simple continuous and daily posted record, showing in detail all debits and credits to accounts, and also the daily balance. Dates and description of items are shown as well. This permits the depositor to check the bank's figures with his own, and to investigate any differences. Statements are posted from the same debits and credits which are used by the deposit ledger clerks, though in the larger banks the latter are given certain figures in recap form. In order to insure that statements and ledgers have been accurately posted, daily comparisons are made between the two and any errors discovered are adjusted.
