This element is particularly objectionable, but is always present in iron and steel, rendering them brittle when hot, a condition known as "red short" or "hot short." Iron and steel for high-grade forgings must not contain more than .04% of sulphur, although for castings the metal may safely contain up to .15%. Sulphur in iron tends to cause the carbon to assume the combined form.
