There are two varieties of this important mineral known in Europe, one of which is brought from China, the other from India. They are both remarkable for their extreme hardness, which approaches to that of the diamond, and are therefore used in polishing gems and steel. In India, corundum powder is formed into a paste with lac resin, and moulded into grindstones of a very durable nature.
