The construction of an oven for case-hardening cycle parts is shown in sketch. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal elevation showing the air holes at the sides. These are simply spaces for half bricks. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section showing the brickwork construction, the outside being best red ordinary bricks with an inside lining of best quality firebricks. The hardening box is shown in position in the centre of the fire. Fig. 3 is a cross-section, not, however, taken through the air-holes. The size of the oven must be regulated by the size of the articles to be hardened. A good size for ordinary work would be 3 ft. or 3 ft. 6 in. long by 2 ft. wide.
