A very good imitation of tortoiseshell can be made by colouring a portion of the pasty celluloid with a, brown or yellowdye soluble in spirit (aniline colour), and then working the dough along with some nearly colourless celluloid. As the two are not properly amalgamated, streaks and patches of colour appear throughout. Considerable experience, however, is required.
