Give the furniture a coat of boiled linseed oil, then immediately sprinkle dry starch upon it, and rub it in well with your hand, or a stiff brush, all over the surface; the starch absorbs the oil, and fills the pores of the wood completely. For black walnut, add a little burned umber to the starch: for cherry, a little Venetian red, etc, according to the color of the wood. Turned work can have it applied while in motion in the lathe. Furniture can afterwards be finished with only one coat of varnish.
