When time, or sturdier materials are not immediately available, a lightweight bookrest for reading in bed can be put together from a stiff, flat box and its cover.

First cut triangles in the exact centers of the narrow sides of the box bottom as shown in A of Figure 7.2. Then lightly score a line down the center as indicated by the dotted line in the sketch. Bend the box along this fine and fasten it through the tops of the V-cuts with paper fasteners thrust through both flaps (x in detail B), then brace it with pieces of cardboard cut from the back edge of the box bottom held in place by fasteners as indicated by y. A stout piece of cord will do as well.

Inserted against the back edge of the box lid, this little bookrest provides a tray in front for holding a thick book or a narrow box of water color paints. For tall books make up the triangular rest from a long piece of heavy cardboard or two pieces taped together at the peak, with triangular cardboard inset lapped into both ends for braces, and fastened with paper fasteners or glue.

Small flat handkerchief boxes can be assembled in like manner for the little mother who is nursing her doll back to health after a severe illness.
