Ashlar shears (Fig. 226) are used in lifting finished dressed work, but care has to be exercised in fixing thin clips in the particular holes - which have to be made for their reception. These holes must not be below the centre of gravity of the stone, otherwise it would overturn and probably be damaged in its fall. Care should be taken to obviate any dragging of the points upwards or outwards.
